#1 Hydration is key

Drinking water effectively provides hydration and flushes out toxins from within. To keep yourself regularly hydrated throughout the day, carry a bottle of water with you and listen to your body- drink water whenever you’re feeling thirsty!

#2 Catch some Z’s (and don’t skip your night routine)
Sleep is one of the most important things we can do to keep our body in tip-top shape! This is critical since your skin renews its cells faster at night, with a peak around 2am, so be in bed before then to catch the skin rejuvenation cycle!

Skin temperature also increases during the night, allowing active ingredients you apply to penetrate better. On the flip side, it means that the skin loses moisture faster.

Bottom line: don’t skip on sleep or your moisturizer for the night!

#3 Better Food, Better Skin
A nutritious diet is a must for that natural glow from within. Strawberries, oranges and kiwi fruits are incredible antioxidants packed with vitamin C, which heals blemishes and increases collagen production. And to lock in moisture, take in more rice bran and olives to replenish the natural emollients in your body.

To counter the negative impact of pollutants in the air, include more vitamin E-rich almonds and avocados in your diet.

On the other hand, reduce caffeine as it can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. While it’s generally safe for healthy individuals to consume up to 5 cups of coffee a day, nutritionist Cynthia Sass recommends just one cup a day (250ml). Caffeine can also be found in tea, energy drinks, Coca-Cola and others.

#4 Get that blood flowing!
Exercise is essential for our skin goals. It effectively increases blood flow, which carries nutrients and oxygen to cells. This nourishes skin cells and keeps your skin glowing. Conversely, waste products (including free radicals) are also carried out of your cells more efficiently.

A useful tip for those with psoriasis and eczema to prevent flare-ups is to exercise in a cool environment (swimming or exercise at night). You can also consider applying moisturizer before exercising to provide some protection from the salt content in perspiration.

#5 Smoking kills… your skin cells
Exposure to cigarette smoke slows down collagen production in our skin, resulting in visible aging, enlarged pores and dull skin.

Skincare can help prevent and repair the damage from cigarette smoke. Look out for ingredients like Vitamins A, C and E to keep your skin hydrated; ginseng to boost blood circulation; and moringa seed extract to purify the skin and protect it from smoke.

#6 Out with the Old, In with the New
Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of cleansing and gentle exfoliating!

Wash your face with a facial cleanser twice a day to rid your skin of pollutants and dirt that accumulate throughout the day, and exfoliate at least once a week to slough off dead skin cells on the surface of your skin for a brightening effect.

#7 Slather on that sunblock!
Brown spots, broken blood vessels, loose skin and wrinkles… These are all visual clues that indicate irreversible sun damage in your skin cells.

Harmful UV rays, coupled with air pollution, can generate free radicals too excessive for our body to neutralize. As a result, the skin dulls over time and ages prematurely.
